FIFA considers expanding to 48 teams in the 2022 World Cup

In 2017, FIFA voted to expand from 32 to 48 teams in the 2026 World Cup. Infantino has said on several occasions since then that he is considering expanding troops ahead of schedule in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

“Qatar is very open to the expansion of troops. However, from the perspective of competition organization, 48 teams have certain difficulties for Qatar, so we are also considering putting some competitions in neighboring countries of Qatar.” Infantino said.

At the same time, Infantino also reiterated the idea of expanding the World Club Cup. According to his plan, a total of 24 club teams from different continents will participate in the World Club Cup after the expansion.
