The International Olympic Committee has greatly increased the number of women’s boxing participants in the Tokyo Olympic Games.

The International Olympic Committee announced on the 19th that the number of women’s boxing events in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will increase from 36 to 100 in the Rio Olympic Games, and the number of participating events will also increase from three to five in Rio, the chances for the Chinese delegation to win the first women’s boxing gold medal will be greatly increased.

Xinhua News Agency, Lausanne, Switzerland, June 19 (Reporter Prince Jiang) The International Olympic Committee announced on the 19th that the number of women’s boxing events in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games will increase from 36 to 100 in the Rio Olympic Games, the number of participating events has also increased from three to five in Rio, and the chances for the Chinese delegation to win the first women’s boxing gold medal will be greatly increased.

The IOC made the above decision at the executive committee meeting held here that day. The IOC sports director Kate McConnell announced the specific matters at the press conference after the meeting. He said that the total number of boxing athletes participating in Tokyo Olympic Games has not changed compared with Rio Olympic Games, and it is still 286. However, in order to ensure gender balance, the number of women’s events has increased from three to five, the number of participants increased from 36 to 100, and the number of men’s projects decreased from 10 to 8, and the number decreased from 250 to 186.

However, these decisions of the executive committee still need to be approved by the IOC plenary session held on June 22 before they can be effective.

If the number of women’s events and participants increases, the hope of Chinese athletes winning the championship will increase greatly. At the Rio Olympics, the Chinese team sent three players to participate in the women’s boxing project and won one silver and two bronze.

McConnell revealed at the press conference that the Olympic qualifying match for boxing will be held from January to May 2020, the host city will be selected from the cities that have hosted the Olympic games or have obtained the qualification for hosting the Olympic Games. Asia and Oceania jointly hold a qualifier in one region, and the competition date is from January to April. The number of participants in each continent will be allocated according to the results of the past two Olympic Games and two world championships.

The reason why boxing projects have received attention on the executive committee of the International Olympic Committee is that the International Boxing Federation has been in constant internal disputes over the past year. Since the end of last year, the International Olympic Committee stopped recognizing the status of the International Boxing Federation in the International Olympic Committee, and boxing was once in danger of losing the qualification to participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games. Last month, after investigation, the IOC executive committee decided to retain boxing as the Tokyo Olympic Games competition, but at the same time canceled the qualification of the International Boxing Federation to organize the operation of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
