French football club opposes the reform plan of the Champions League

32 participating teams are divided into 4 groups, each group has 8 teams. The top six teams of each group automatically qualify for the next season without considering their ranking in their respective leagues.

Xinhua News Agency, Paris, May 15 (reporter Su Bin) the French professional football league held a meeting on the 15th. Delegates raised objections to the New Champions league system that may be implemented since 2024.

It is reported that Uefa is planning to reform the champions league system from the 2020-2025 season. 32 participating teams are divided into 4 groups, each group has 8 teams. The top six teams of each group automatically qualify for the next season without considering their ranking in their respective leagues.

At the meeting held in Paris that day, the French club voted on the reform plan of the Champions League. 32 of the delegates voted against it and 3 abstained.

The French professional football league expressed concern about the impact of the Champions League restructuring plan on the domestic league in terms of competition and economy.

According to Di Kiyo, the chief executive officer of the alliance, big clubs represented by Paris Saint Germain, Marseille and Lyon also participated in the vote, but he did not disclose the opinions of these clubs.

The President of the French Football Association Legel attended the meeting and also brought the Champions League restructuring options to the delegates. Both Kiyo and legrae refused to disclose the details of the alternative.

UEFA will hold a meeting in Budapest, the capital of Hungary on the 17th. Uefa has said that during the meeting, member associations will be informed of the latest progress of the Champions League restructuring plan.

Legrae should attend the meeting as a representative of the French Football Association. In his view, the Champions League restructuring plan prepared by UEFA will cause losses to relevant French football agencies and clubs in terms of TV broadcasting income, weaken the status of domestic leagues, and the schedule will be too tight.

“In the past few days, we have tried to persuade some people to propose amendments to the Champions League restructuring plan.” Legolai said, “the club has decided to consider our proposal and we will submit it to Uefa in the next few days.”

The French professional football league said that the club agreed to submit alternatives to UEFA. UEFA said earlier that the discussion on the restructuring plan would last for about one year.
